The agreement in connection with the Hong kong cable

and the Chinese Office in Hong kong were confirmed and

amplified in letters from Mr. Dunn, the Eastern Extension

Company's agent, to the Director of the imperial Chinese

Telegraph Administration of July 21, 1884 (Flagged B in

annexed volume j.

A further agreement made on October 17, 1884 gave the

Companies increased facilities in connection with the

landing of their cable at Sharp reak and the accommodation

of one of their officials at a Chinese station to be

placed there. The se agreements were all coterminous with

the concession granted to the Northern Telegraph company.

in transmitting a copy of the 1883 Agreement to the

Foreign Office, Mr. J. render, of the Eastern Extension

Company said

we should much prefer the Chinese land

"system ceasing at Kowloon where we could take over the

"traffic and transmit it to Hong Kong: but should the

"Chinese insist upon coming into Hong Kong we should be

"prepared, with the approval or His Majesty's Government,

"to give them accommodation in our telegraph office on

"the same conditions as we enjoy similar accommodation at

"Shanghai, as defined in Article 7 of the Agreement herewith,

"and the use of a wire or our kowloon line, provided it was

"not used to compete with the capie system for traffic or

"in any other way pre judicial to the company's interests."

it is clear that the company could not have obtained

the arrangements they considered essential at Shanghai had

they not been in a position, with the consent of His

Majesty's.
